NU, DLSU stars expect tough UAAP women’s volleyball clash

Key players from the National University Lady Bulldogs and the De La Salle University Lady Spikers are expecting a tough battle in their upcoming UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament match-up this Saturday.

According to Lady Bulldogs veteran Mhicaela Belen, the team will spend the next few days watching the Lady Spikers’ previous matches to study their tendencies and determine what they can do as a unit.

“‘Yun La Salle kasi champion team sila, and alam naman po namin na hindi siya magiging madali,” Belen said after the Lady Bulldogs’ straight-set win over the University of the East Lady Warriors last Sunday.

“Ang gagawin na lang siguro namin is papanuorin kung papaano sila maglaro, titignan kung papaano ‘yung galaw nila, and also tignan kung ano ang puwede naming gawin as a team against La Salle,” she added.

Lady Spikers stars Angel Canino and Alleiah Malaluan, for their part, believe that DLSU can renew their mastery of the Lady Bulldogs despite the departure of their veteran players from last season.

“Ang lagi ko lang naalala na sinasabi ni coach (Ramil de Jesus) sa amin is, ‘Huwag hanapin ‘yung wala and I-workout kung ano ang meron kami.’ Lahat naman nandun na para sa amin, wala naman pong kulang, kailangan lang namin trabahuhin,” Canino said.

“We have been training for like months, so I think connection na lang talaga ‘yung kailangan naming i-work on inside the court against them (NU),” added Malaluan.

Interestingly, among the Lady Spikers players from last year’s team who have turned professional are Mereophe Sharma, Jolina dela Cruz, Marionne Alba, Justine Jazareno, and Matet Espina.

For the Lady Bulldogs, those who departed the team last season include Princess Ann Robles, Jennifer Nierva, and Joyme Cagande, all of whom are now part of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers.

DLSU and NU have faced each other during the last two UAAP women’s volleyball finals, with the Lady Bulldogs winning Season 84 and the Lady Spikers bouncing back in Season 85.
