The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses face an additional challenge ahead of their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball clash with the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
According to Cassie Carballo, the Golden Tigresses’ focus is divided between their preliminary exams, scheduled from March 13 to 16, and their upcoming match against the Lady Falcons.
“We’ve had more challenges these past few days, kasi prelims week namin. Majority sa amin, nagpupuyat para ma-complete lang ‘yung school works, mag-aral for the exams, and maka-catch up sa school,” Carballo said in an interview with The Varsitarian.
“’Yung training and preparation namin are still the same,” she added. “Same intensity pa rin, same ‘yung load. Pero, medyo challenging lang siya these past few days dahil hindi 100% ‘yung body namin dahil kulang sa pahinga.”
Golden Tigresses rookie Angeline Poyos acknowledged the challenge of balancing focus between studies and upcoming games, emphasizing the importance of maintaining grades for student-athletes.
“Struggle po talaga sa amin ang pag-manage ng time,” Poyos said. “Kasi hindi naman po puwedeng pabayaan ‘yung studies. We need to maintain our grades, so that adds challenge po talaga on our part as student-athletes.”
The Golden Tigresses, currently boasting a 6-0 win-loss record, will aim to achieve a first-round sweep for the first time since UAAP Season 69 in 2007 under then head coach August Santamaria.
