UST coach Kung Fu praises FEU mentor: They played really well

University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes praised his Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws counterpart Manolo Refugia after their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament game on Saturday night.

Reyes acknowledged that the Lady Tamaraws exhibited greater determination and aggression during their 19-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, and 15-10 victory over the Golden Tigresses at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate, Manila.

“Ang ganda lang talaga ng ginalaw ni FEU credit to them,” Reyes said. “Madami kaming natutunan na dadalhin namin into the next games namin hanggang sa matapos ‘yung second round.”

Reyes noted that it was unfortunate that the Golden Tigresses players who performed well against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons struggled against the Lady Tamaraws.

Regina Jurado and Jonna Perdido, who both tallied 24 points against UP, were held to 15 and 12 markers, respectively, against FEU. Additionally, Xyza Gula and Mae Coronado, who combined for 21 points against UP, managed just 15 points in total.

“Very unfortunate na ‘yung mga nagperform for us last game, although nandun pa din naman ‘yung numbers, pero hindi pa din ganun kataas, pero ‘yun ang missing link,” Reyes said.

Reyes also mentioned that, despite star rookie Angeline Poyos returning from a one-game absence due to dehydration, she was not yet at full strength against the Lady Tamaraws.

“Medyo naging shaky ‘yung galaw niya (nung fourth set kaya nilabas ko), hindi ko na tinatanong kung pagod siya, ang tinatanong ko is kung nilalamig ba siya, medyo nararamdaman pa din niya ‘yung lamig,” Reyes said.

“Pero ‘yun lang, sa scoring maasahan mo, pero ‘yung 100 percent niya physically, meron pang konting, kumbaga, residue nung pagiging unstable niya nung past few days,” he added.

The Golden Tigresses are already assured of a Final Four seat with their 10-2 win-loss slate.
