Meralco’s Chris Newsome: It’s our turn to strike back in Game 5

Meralco Bolts guard Chris Newsome said it is their turn to retaliate against the San Miguel Beermen in the pivotal Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals tonight at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Bolts and the Beermen were forced into a 2-2 deadlock in the best-of-seven title series following San Miguel’s 111-101 Game 4 victory on Wednesday evening at the same venue.

“Now it’s back to square one; now it’s our turn to punch back. We got a day of rest, and then we’re back at it on Friday. It’s gonna be a grindout for the rest of the series,” Newsome said. “It’s gonna come down to who’s playing better basketball.”

Newsome, who tallied a career-high of 40 points in their Game 4 loss, admitted that the Bolts had defensive lapses against the Beermen, which they need to address come Game 5.

“A hundred-eleven (points)? That’s definitely more than what we’re used to giving up,” Newsome said. “And the presence of guys like Vic (Manuel) and Terrence (Romeo) did a lot for them.”

“For us, it’s back to the drawing board and get back to playing Meralco basketball, which is defensive-minded,” added the former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles star. “I’ll trade that 40 points for a win any day.”

Game 5 of the PBA Finals is slated for 7:30 p.m. tonight.
