PH crashes out of World Cup qualifiers

Goals from Patrick Reichelt and Kevin Ingreso were not enough to save the Philippine national football team’s dwindling hopes of making the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The nationals bowed to Vietnam, 2-3, in the second qualifying round at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Thursday night.

Nguyen Tien Lihn scored a brace for the Vietnamese side, but it was Pham Tuan Hai who struck hard against the Filipinos, scoring during the extra five minutes.

Reichelt drew first blood for the nationals with a strike in the 62nd minute, but Nguyen equalized for Vietnam three minutes later.

Nguyen scored a follow-up in the 76th minute, until Ingreso leveled the score in the 89th.

Then came Pham’s heartbreaker during added time.

With the loss, the national team is eliminated from World Cup contention.

The Philippines came into the second qualifying round at the bottom of Group F with just a single point. The nationals are two points behind Vietnam and six points behind Indonesia.

The Filipino squad still has one game remaining against Indonesia on June 11 in Jakarta.
