Bonbon Custodio displays vintage game as Davao Occidental stuns Manila

Bonifacio “Bonbon” Custodio showcased his vintage game as the Davao Occidental Tigers-Cocolife scored a 92-82 upset over the Manila SV Batang Sampaloc SGA Stars in the 2024 MPBL Season on Monday night at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

The former San Miguel Beermen guard finished with 15 points, with 12 coming in the second half, to go with six rebounds, three assists, and a steal as the Tigers secured their second straight win for a 12-5 win-loss slate.

Arthur dela Cruz had a near triple-double of 17 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds; Mark Tallo added 15 markers; and Chris Lalata and Kenneth Ighalo had 11 each for Davao Occidental.

From a 46-all score at the half, the Tigers slowly pulled away in the third quarter behind consecutive baskets by Custodio and conversions from Ighalo, Dela Cruz, and Tallo for a 76-65 lead.

Davao Occidental maintained their aggression in the fourth quarter with connections from Custodio as the lead reached its biggest at 14 points at 82-68 with six minutes left in the game.

“Nung second half, pumunta lang kami dun sa advantage namin, maliliit kasi ‘yung guards nila so minaximize namin ‘yun,” Custodio said. “Medyo nagkaka edad na tayo, so in-enjoy ko na lang ‘yung game.”

Rabeh Al-Hussaini stepped up in the absence of Gregory Slaughter and tallied 18 points, while John Cantimbuhan and Carl Bryan Cruz added 15 and 13, respectively, for the Stars, which saw their eight-game winning run snapped to drop to 13-5.

Meanwhile, Jielo Razon caught fire with 34 points, including five three-point conversions, as the Paranaque Patriots (11-7) pulled off a 97-94 victory over the Mindoro Tamaraws (5-13).

Warren Bonifacio, on the other hand, tallied 20 points and seven rebounds as the Pasay Voyagers (11-7) escaped with a 65-60 triumph over the Sarangani Marlins (4-14).
