Former PBA players Jayjay Helterbrand and Rico Maierhofer felt that Barangay Ginebra came out as a winner by picking RJ Abarrientos in the 2024 Draft.
Maierhofer said during their discussion in the PBA Motoclub Team Amazing vlog that Abarrientos should be considered an asset for the Gin Kings.
“(After college) ang unang ginawa niya… nag 3X3 siya, afterwards pumunta siyang Korea. Pagpunta niya ng Korea dun niya kinuha lahat ng pwedeng kuning experience overseas,” he said.
“Naniwala sa kanya si Tim Cone, the greatest (PBA) coach of all time.”
For his part, Helterbrand cited that Abarrientos has PBA lineage, being the nephew of PBA legend Johnny Abarrientos.
“This is a 3-point guy, through and through in his family, the greatest point guard, Johnny Abarrientos. He’s got ‘yung galaw ni (Johnny),” said Helterbrand, a former Gin King himself.
“I’m so happy that we got him. He’s gonna be a great player for me. If I had the choice, I would have put Abarrientos in. He’s one of those special point guards na capable, especially with the lineup nila ngayon… imementor pa ni LA (Tenorio) si Abarrientos.”
