After turning down the New York Knicks’ request to interview head coach Billy Donovan, the Chicago Bulls are reportedly looking to secure Donovan’s services for the long haul.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, via Bleacher Report’s Doric Sam, the Bulls “are in the process of extending” Donovan’s contract, which currently has one year remaining.
Donovan had previously signed an extension before the 2022–23 season, but renewed interest from other teams—including the Knicks—appears to have accelerated Chicago’s move toward another new deal.
Donovan, who joined the Bulls in 2020 after a five-year run with the Oklahoma City Thunder, has compiled a 195–205 record with the team. In his five seasons at the helm, Chicago has made the playoffs only once, bowing out in the first round in 2022.
In the 2024–25 season, the Bulls finished 39–43 and missed the playoffs after falling to the Miami Heat in the play-in tournament. The team also traded longtime star Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings, shifting focus to a younger core led by Coby White.
With the No. 12 pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, the Bulls are expected to continue rebuilding, with Donovan still tasked to steer the franchise back to postseason success.
