Alex Eala outlasts French foe to advance in Nottingham Open

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala battled past France’s Varvara Gracheva, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to reach the second round of the WTA 250 Lexus Nottingham Open qualifiers on Saturday evening (Manila time) in England.

Eala, seeded sixth in the qualifying draw, showed poise in the decider to dispatch the world No. 166 and move within one win of a spot in the tournament’s main draw.

She will next face Romania’s Anca Todoni, the 11th seed, for one of the six coveted qualifying slots.

The 19-year-old Eala is seeking redemption after falling in the quarterfinals of the Ilkley Open to Canada’s Rebecca Marino just two days prior.

The match schedule for her showdown with Todoni has yet to be announced.
