Converge on hiring Dwight Howard as PBA import: ‘Sana mag align ‘yung stars’

The Converge FiberXers are hoping that former NBA center Dwight Howard will be available to play as their reinforcement for the 2024 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, scheduled later this year.

According to FiberXers team manager Jacob Lao, they have yet to consider the idea of tapping the 6-foot-10 Howard for the mid-season conference as he has some commitments during that time.

“Sana mag align ‘yung stars,” Lao said in an interview with The Snow Bomb Squad podcast on Friday night. “I have to discuss it with Dwight, pero I think may previous commitments, siya.”

“Sana available siya pero parang may previous commitments siya sa mga days na ‘yun (during the PBA Commissioner’s Cup), kaya hindi ko rin sure kung tutumpak sa schedule,” he added.

Howard, a one-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, has previously expressed his desire to play as an import in the PBA and has criticized the league’s previous 6-foot-9 height limit for the Commissioner’s Cup.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial recently removed the import height limit for the Commissioner’s Cup but has maintained the 6-foot-6 import ceiling for the Governors’ Cup.

The former NBA top-overall pick has previously played as a reinforcement for Lao’s Strong Group Athletics in the Dubai International Basketball Championship earlier this year.
