Kiefer Ravena should be reconsidered for Gilas Pilipinas, says Charles Tiu

Strong Group Athletics-Pilipinas head coach Charles Tiu believes that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) should reconsider having Kiefer Ravena back with the Gilas Pilipinas.

According to Tiu, the Yokohama B-Corsairs point guard will have a different impact under current Gilas head coach Tim Cone compared to the team of ex-national team mentor Vincent “Chot” Reyes.

“Obviously, playing under Tim Cone (and) playing under coach Chot (Reyes) are different, so I love for them to reconsider him also,” Tiu said in an interview with The Snow Bomb Squad podcast on Monday night.

“For me, he is still one of the top point guards and the most experienced point guard in the country,” he added. “Siyempre, iba pa din ‘yung (may experience sa) FIBA; also, he is a good teammate to have; walang ego, he just wants to win.”

Tiu further said that including Ravena in the Gilas Pilipinas’ extended national team pool will also be beneficial for the national team if one of their key players gets injured.

“Ako, I think he should always be considered and be part of the bigger (player) pool, pero alam ko naman, ‘yung direksyon nila na they want the players who are familiar with the system of coach Tim Cone,” Tiu said.

“Pero when there are injuries, it won’t hurt to call a veteran player like him; maybe at least tryout for a spot in the team, lalo ‘yan para sa bayan gustong gusto ‘yan ni Kiefer,” he added.

Ravena was criticized by the netizens for being the main point guard for Reyes during his time with the national team.
