Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist, has set her sights on a new goal—starting a family.
Diaz hopes to become pregnant “as soon as possible” so she can return to training after giving birth and prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“I want to continue my training with the main goal of becoming pregnant this year so I can really focus on my LA [Olympics] bid,” Diaz said in a report by BusinessMirror.
The weightlifting champion, who made history at the 2020 Tokyo Games, believes she still has enough time to qualify for her fifth and final Olympic cycle.
“The Olympic qualifications start in 2026, so I have time,” she said.
To achieve her goal, Diaz plans to skip other major international competitions and focus solely on accumulating points in six Olympic qualifying events.
At 33, she acknowledges that this will likely be her last attempt at the Games.
“I’m already 33, and I think it will be my last qualification,” she said. “So I want to put all my effort after reaching my goal this year, training hard while waiting for God to gift me and Julius our first child.”
