Etheridge makes history as Buriram United reaches AFC Champions League quarters

Filipino goalkeeper Neil Etheridge made history by helping Buriram United secure a spot in the AFC Champions League quarterfinals.

Etheridge, a former Philippine Azkal, kept a clean sheet as the Thai club edged Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim, 1-0, in the second leg of their round-of-16 matchup. Filipino defender Jefferson Tabinas also contributed to the win.

Suphanat Mueanta scored the fixture’s lone goal in the 58th minute, sealing Buriram United’s place as the first Southeast Asian club to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Following the victory, Etheridge took to Instagram to celebrate:

“Slowly sinking in… 🔜🇸🇦 Into the Quarter Finals of the Champions League 👀,” he wrote.
