Disciplined Gilas Youth crush Malaysia, sweep SEABA qualifiers

A more disciplined and focused Gilas Pilipinas Youth squad dominated a hapless Malaysia, 96-61, in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers on Thursday night at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in Pampanga.

Travis Pascual and Jeremiah Antolin led the charge with 15 points each, while Prince Cariño delivered a strong all-around performance with 13 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.

Everaigne Cruz also filled the stat sheet with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks. Jolo Pascual and Jhello Lumague added 10 points apiece in the rout.

Coming off a tight win over Indonesia, the young nationals came out sharper and more composed against Malaysia. After a 7-all deadlock early in the first period, the Gilas Boys unleashed a 21-5 run that stunned their opponents and built a commanding 28-12 lead.

They never looked back, maintaining control throughout the game.

The victory capped a 5-0 sweep of the elimination round for the Gilas Boys, setting up a finals rematch with their fiercest rivals, Indonesia.

Regardless of the result in the championship match, the Philippines has already clinched a berth in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup main draw this August.
