City officials hope Carver Park splash pad will mark new era

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — City officials are hoping a new splash pad will mark a turning point for Carver Park.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the splash pad was held at the park on Monday afternoon. The new Carver Park amenity has been open since the beginning of summer.

"It's bringing more revitalization to this area," said District Four City Councilor Toyia Tucker.

In 2021, Tucker was a supporter of a city council vote which closed Carver Park on weekends, following two deadly shootings.

"Prior, Carver Park had a bad name. Crime and different incidents had occurred and it was all in the media," Tucker explained.

Since the splash pad reopened, the park has been open on weekends once again. Tucker wants this to mark a new era for the park.

According to the District Four councilor, the splash pad is already a hit with local families. Tucker said she regularly receives videos from local parents which feature their children playing in the water.

The splash pad is funded by 2021 SPLOST funds. It is free to enter and provides a place for kids to cool off in the summer heat. Tucker hopes it will also help keep young people busy and out of trouble.

Her goal is to eventually make the District Four park a place for community gatherings, fishing and more.

Tucker said the city also plans to use SPLOST funds to add a new playground at Carver Park.

Caver Park's splash pad will remain open at least through the end of September, closing with the cooler winter months, according to Columbus Parks and Recreation officials.

Regular splash pad hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. More information can be found online at the Columbus Parks and Recreation website.
