Cloudy start to a steamy afternoon; summer-time heat comes back

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) -- Good Thursday morning! We're kicking off the day with sticky humidity, plenty of clouds, and even a few early showers or storms around the region.

As the morning progresses, skies should gradually clear, allowing temperatures to climb into the mid 80s by late morning. By afternoon, expect partly sunny skies and a high in the low 90s. A stray shower or storm can't be ruled out late this evening or into the early nighttime hours.

Looking ahead to Friday, we wrap up the workweek with more of the same — mostly to partly sunny skies and highs in the low 90s as high pressure continues to hold. However, a weak shortwave could sneak in by Saturday, bringing a better chance for isolated showers or storms.

Next Week Preview: The forecast returns to a more typical August pattern — seasonal heat in the low 90s and the daily chance of pop-up afternoon storms.

Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Storm Erin continues its trek across the Atlantic and is expected to become our first hurricane by Friday, potentially reaching major hurricane status by the weekend. Early model guidance shows a weakening upper-level ridge, which may steer Erin away from the U.S., but we'll continue to monitor closely.
