Columbus Fire and EMS provides useful tips for a safe Labor Day weekend on the grill

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Folks are preparing to fire up their grills this upcoming Labor Day weekend, and Columbus Fire and EMS says safety should remain a top priority.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, while charcoal or other solid fuel grills were involved in 1,300 home fires per year.

The association says having a fire extinguisher on hand could prevent your Labor Day fun from becoming a holiday disaster.

Columbus Fire and EMS Fire Inspector Lt. Courtney Brown also expresses that an extinguisher close by is well-needed if anyone plans to grill over the weekend.

"Always have a fire extinguisher, whether that may be a two-pound or a five-pound extinguisher, in which you can get those from your Walmarts, or your Home Depots, or Lowes. Just make sure you have an extinguisher there in reach and that you properly know how to use an extinguisher," Brown explained.

He also touched on a worst-case scenario situation and said to call the fire department to battle the blaze if anyone ever runs into any problems that lead to a fire.

"If you don't have an extinguisher, call us, and we'll be there to do what we do," he expressed.

He also says it is important to grill in a safe zone, if can, meaning at least being three feet away from children, homes and flammable objects when grilling.
