Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex Eala” not only made history by winning her main draw debut at the 2025 US Open, but she also secured a financial windfall for her achievement.
The 20-year-old Filipino tennis star is guaranteed a minimum of $154,000 (₱8.7 million) after upsetting World No. 14 Clara Tauson, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11), in their round of 128 clash early Monday morning (Manila time).
Ranked No. 75 in the world, Eala pulled off a remarkable comeback, rallying from a 1-5 deficit in the third set before clinching the dramatic tiebreaker to advance to the round of 64.
This year’s US Open boasts the largest prize purse in tennis history, with players earning at least $110,000 (₱6.2 million) for simply reaching the main draw.
Eala’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Cristina Bucsa and Claire Liu. A victory would guarantee her $237,000 (₱13.4 million) and a spot in the round of 32.
