The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) finds itself once again in hot water after questionable moments surfaced during the Paranaque Patriots’ game against the Bataan Risers.
In a viral post on Facebook by basketball blogger El Grapiko, suspicions were raised over unusual behavior late in the fourth quarter, when Bataan already held a commanding 44-point lead with just 1:21 left on the clock.
“Last 1:21 ng 4th quarter parang naghahabol pa rin yung Bataan Risers kahit lamang na sila ng 44 points at garbage time na lang, bench players na lang din kalaban nila hahaha,” the post read.
Adding to the controversy, El Grapiko alleged that Paranaque appeared to be deliberately struggling to put points on the board. He singled out Patriots guard Kristoffer Torrado, claiming he kept forcing shots, committing turnovers, and fouling during the stretch.
Even more eyebrow-raising was the sight of Bataan head coach Goody Ilagan seemingly busy on his cellphone during the game. “Coach ng Bataan nagseselphone nga ba during the game? Parang may kakaiba sa game na ’to,” El Grapiko noted.

The MPBL has battled allegations of game-fixing before. Just last year, on Feb. 26, 2024, the league imposed a sweeping ban on 47 players and officials linked to game-fixing activities.
With fresh controversy now stirring, fans are once again calling on the league to closely investigate the integrity of its games.
