New K9s to be sworn in by Columbus Police Department

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Columbus Police Department is set to swear in four new K9 officers in a ceremony on Monday.

The police department says this milestone swearing in ceremony marks the largest K9 unit in CPD history and is the first time the department has had full-service K9s.

"These dogs are more than partners; they're protectors of our city," said Chief Stoney Mathis. "We're proud to welcome the largest and most capable K9 Unit in department history, and this ceremony gives us the chance to formally introduce them to the community."

The new officers are:

  • K9 Colt – Belgian Malinois, 2 years old, partnered with Cpl. Brendan Martin. Trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension.
  • K9 Havoc – German Shepherd, 2 years old, partnered with Cpl. Brent Wilson. Trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension.
  • K9 Neytiri – Belgian Malinois, 8 years old, partnered with Cpl. Keith Black. Trained in explosive detection, tracking, and apprehension.
  • K9 Redd – Dutch Shepherd, 8 years old, partnered with Cpl. Keith Black. Trained in narcotics detection

Police say in addition to this, K9 Frog, a seasoned narcotics dog already serving CPD, will be transitioning into a new role within the department.
