Inmate found naked back in custody after walking off work camp site in Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, Ga. (WRBL) — Harris County officials announced on Tuesday that an inmate who walked away from a work camp site was back in custody.

According to Harris County officials, at approximately 2:26 p.m., the Harris County Sheriff's Office, along with the Georgia State Patrol, responded to the Idle Hour Boat Ramp area in Fortson regarding a work camp inmate, currently assigned to the Harris County Prison, who had walked away from a work detail.

The incident led to nearby schools being placed on lockdown and a Code Red alert was issued by Harris County's 911 Center.

Officials say deputies then quickly established a perimeter along Mountain Drive and Lick Skillet Road.

At approximately 2:47 p.m. one of our alert and helpful citizens reported a naked white male flagging down vehicles on Lick Skillet Road. The citizen was able to alert a nearby deputy, who made contact with the individual, according to Harris County officials.

Officials say the person, who was completely naked, was confirmed to be the escaped prison camp inmate. He was promptly taken into custody and transported back to the prison camp, where he was turned over to prison staff without further incident.

Officials thanked the vigilant citizen for their quick actions and assistance with notifying authorities on the escaped inmate.
