OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – An Opelika Police officer is recovering after his patrol vehicle was hit by another car early Tuesday morning on Interstate 85.
According to investigators, the crash happened around 4:19 a.m. on I-85 northbound near mile marker 62. The officer had responded to a single-vehicle crash and was seated inside his patrol Tahoe waiting for a tow truck to arrive when, around 4:40 a.m., a Tesla struck the rear of the vehicle.
The impact trapped the officer inside. Opelika Fire and Rescue crews responded quickly, extricating him and providing medical care before transporting him to Piedmont Columbus Regional in Columbus, Georgia. Officials say his injuries are non-life-threatening.
The driver of the Tesla was also taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Opelika Police are reminding drivers to stay alert, slow down, and move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside — a small action that can save lives.
