Toddler killed in Lanett hit-and-run; suspect arrested overnight

LANETT, Ala. (WRBL) — Lanett Police have made an arrest in the deadly hit-and-run which claimed the life of a toddler Tuesday evening.

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on October 21, 2025, officers and Lanett EMS responded to the 400 block of South 4th Avenue after reports that a 19-month-old child had been struck by a vehicle. When first responders arrived, they found the child had died from injuries sustained in the incident. Detectives say the driver had left the scene before officers arrived.

Investigators gathered witness statements and surveillance video, which helped identify a vehicle matching the description given by witnesses. In the early morning hours of October 22, officers—working alongside the Chambers County Sheriff's Office and LaFayette Police Department—located the vehicle at a LaFayette residence.

Police say the driver, 24-year-old Deanthony Wright, was taken into custody and charged with vehicular homicide.

Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain thanked citizens and partner agencies for their assistance, asking the community to "keep the families affected by this tragic event in their thoughts and prayers."

24-year-old Deanthony Wright was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday and booked into the Chambers County Jail in connection with the case.

Investigators say the dark SUV pictured in an earlier public alert has since been identified as the vehicle involved in the crash.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of South 4th Avenue. Additional details are expected to be released later Wednesday.
