Alex Eala grateful for overwhelming support despite Australian Open exit

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala expressed her gratitude to fans after receiving overwhelming support during her Australian Open debut, saying the crowd’s presence made her first-round loss both emotional and meaningful.

Eala drew a large and vocal following at Melbourne Park as she faced American Alycia Parks in the opening round of the women’s singles event.

The match was played in front of a packed court, with many supporters waving Philippine flags and cheering throughout the contest.

“It was so heart-warming,” Eala said during her post-match press conference. “That’s one of the things that makes a loss like today a little bit harder as I know a lot of people were rooting for me.”

The 20-year-old acknowledged the effort made by fans who filled the venue and gathered around nearby screens to watch her play, describing the atmosphere as something she deeply appreciated.

“The fact that everyone came out and really squeezed into that cosy court, I really appreciate it,” she said. “I felt so loved. Even when I was 5-2 down in the third, I still felt the love. So I’m really appreciative and super thankful.”

The Filipina standout, who currently ranks No. 44 in WTA live rankings, said she is still adjusting to the attention that comes with her growing popularity, particularly among Filipino fans in Australia.

“I’m still young, 20, so I’m learning how to deal with all of this attention,” Eala said. “But at the same time, I’m grateful.”

Despite the early exit, Eala said the experience carried a larger meaning beyond the result, especially as the lone Filipina in this year’s Australian Open draw.

“I guess this is one of the moments that I can reflect on what this means for Philippine tennis,” she said. “There are positives to take away.”

Eala is coming off a breakthrough year that saw her become the first Filipina to crack the top 50 of the WTA rankings, further cementing her status as one of the country’s most prominent athletes on the global stage. (AC)
