Mike Phillips has been cleared by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to play as a local for Gilas Pilipinas, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced.
In a statement, the SBP thanked FIBA for its swift action in reviewing its request and classifying Phillips as a player without restriction, making him eligible to suit up as a local player in all FIBA-sanctioned tournaments.
The former De La Salle University Green Archers standout had previously shown his commitment to represent the country after joining Gilas Pilipinas Men during the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.
His latest clearance now allows him to fully participate in international competitions under FIBA without limitations tied to eligibility status.
“It’s a blessing and a huge honor to officially be eligible to represent the Philippines. The opportunity to play for the national team is a longtime dream and an answered prayer! I’m beyond grateful to FIBA, the SBP, and everyone who supported this process,” said Phillips.
“Handa na po akong lumaban para sa ating bansa! Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ang buong puso ko! I cannot wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward. Para sa Bayan!” he added.
The decision is expected to strengthen Gilas Pilipinas’ roster moving forward, with Phillips now available for selection in upcoming FIBA competitions as the national team continues its preparations for future international tournaments. (AC)
