Brownlee magical in second half as Ginebra outduels Converge

Justin Brownlee overcame a poor first half shooting to lead Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings to a 99-93 win over Converge FiberXers in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

After a disastrous shooting in the first half, the Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player stepped up in the last two quarter to end up with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists as the Gin Kings improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate.

Rhon Jay Abarrientos chipped in a conference-high of 32 points, four assists, and three rebounds, and Jeth Troy Rosario tallied a double-double of 10 points and 13 boards for the Gin Kings.

Down by as many as 10 points early in the third quarter, the Gin Kings turned things around behind consecutive hits from Brownlee and Abarrientos and triples from Nard John Pinto to take an 81-74 lead.

The FiberXers, however, responded with their own run to snatch a 93-92 edge, but free throws by Rosario and Abarrientos and a basket from Brownlee gave the Gin Kings the lead for good.

Justine Baltazar top-scored for the FiberXers with 20 points, Mikey Williams and MJ Garcia added 16 and 15, respectively, Kylor Kelley had a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds as they fell to a 1-4 record.

Both teams were shorthanded with injuries with the Gin Kings missing the services of Japeth Aguilar, Kemark Carino, and Jayson David, and the Converge without Juan Gomez de Liaño, Calvin Abueva, and Justin Arana.
