PNVF to review FIVB suspension, vows to protect athletes and national team program

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) said it is carefully reviewing the implications of its suspension by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and has pledged to prioritize the welfare of Filipino athletes amid the ongoing issue.

In an official statement released Friday, the federation confirmed that it had received the FIVB communication dated May 29, 2026 and is consulting with advisers and stakeholders regarding the matter.

“The Federation acknowledges receipt of the FIVB communication dated 29 May 2026 and is carefully reviewing its implications with the appropriate advisers and stakeholders,” the PNVF said.

The federation emphasized that its immediate focus remains on safeguarding the interests of Filipino volleyball players and ensuring the country’s continued participation in international competitions.

“PNVF’s immediate priority is to serve the Filipino athlete, preserve the country’s participation in international volleyball, and ensure continuity for the sport,” the statement read.

The PNVF also expressed its respect for the roles of the FIVB, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and other institutions involved in Philippine and international sports, adding that it is prepared to work through the proper channels as the situation develops.

“The Federation respects the important roles of FIVB, PSC, POC, and all relevant institutions in Philippine and international sport, and is prepared to engage constructively through the proper channels,” it said.

The federation acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and said it intends to gain a full understanding of the concerns raised, the procedures moving forward, and the potential operational impact on volleyball activities in the country.

“Given the seriousness of the matter, PNVF will seek a full understanding of the issues raised, the process moving forward, and the operational implications for Philippine volleyball,” the statement added.

The PNVF said it will release further updates once appropriate.

The statement came a day after the FIVB announced the immediate suspension of the PNVF over governance concerns and alleged violations of the FIVB Code of Ethics that are currently under investigation by the world governing body’s independent Ethics Panel.

To ensure continuity and proper governance during the suspension, the FIVB has established an Ad Hoc Committee that will temporarily oversee the affairs of the PNVF in accordance with Article 1.9.1 of the FIVB General Regulations.

The committee will be chaired by FIVB Executive Committee member Hila Asanuma and will include Mathieu Mériaux, FIVB Asia Regional Officer and Empowerment Manager; Stephen Bock, FIVB Head of Legal and General Counsel; Hitesh Malhotra, FIVB Head of Empowerment and National Federation Relations; and Alexa Dabao, FIVB Legal Contractor in the Philippines.

According to the FIVB, the committee’s immediate priorities will be ensuring the participation of Philippine national team athletes in upcoming international competitions and helping guarantee the successful staging of the upcoming Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) stop in the Philippines in coordination with local organizers and other stakeholders.

The FIVB also said it has laid out a clear pathway for the PNVF to regain its standing and remains committed to protecting the integrity of Philippine volleyball while supporting its sustainable long-term development.
