Ateneo, SBP reportedly moving to axe Tab Baldwin – source

Ateneo de Manila University and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) are reportedly moving toward parting ways with veteran coach Tab Baldwin as scrutiny continues following the deaths of Blue Eagles players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Aurora.

The report surfaced days after Baldwin publicly accepted responsibility for the tragedy, admitting he felt he had failed as a leader, coach and guardian of the student-athletes under his care.

The development also comes amid reports that Baldwin has been seriously considering resigning from his post as Ateneo head coach after guiding the university to multiple UAAP titles.

If finalized, the move would end Baldwin’s long association with both Ateneo and the national basketball federation, where he currently serves as head of Gilas Pilipinas Youth basketball programme.

The uncertainty surrounding Baldwin’s future comes as Ateneo continues to deal with the aftermath of the June 8 tragedy that claimed the lives of Baterbonia and Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Several government agencies, including the Department of Justice, National Bureau of Investigation, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, are conducting separate investigations into the incident.
