ALAS Pilipinas Girls suffered another setback in the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship after Venezuela rallied for a five-set victory, 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 15-11, on Wednesday (Philippine time) in San Felipe, Chile.
Despite the loss, the Philippines secured a place in the Round of 16 after finishing the Pool B preliminary round with a 2-3 record and avoided dropping into the classification bracket for places 17th to 24th.
The Alas Girls appeared headed for a straight-set defeat after Venezuela took the first two frames, but the Filipinas fought back to force a deciding set by winning the third and fourth.
Venezuela regained control in the fifth set, however, to complete the comeback and finish the pool stage with a 3-2 record.
Caera Celis led the Philippines with 24 points, including 22 attacks and two aces, while also contributing five digs and four excellent receptions. Xyz Ellen Rayco added 19 points, 15 digs and three excellent receptions.
Jhaynna Bulandres contributed eight points on six attacks and two blocks, while Cristina Madele Gale finished with six points from three attacks and three blocks.
Irish May Mahinay scored five points, including two blocks and three aces, while Sharina Rhyza Lleses added four points. Taj Teves and Khaira Manzano chipped in two points apiece, while Jhenica Sadia had one.
Nadeth Faye Herbon anchored the Philippine defense with 20 digs and three excellent receptions.
The Philippines held a narrow advantage in attacks, 57-58 in Venezuela’s favor, while Venezuela dominated the blocking department, 16-8. The two teams were tied at 25 errors apiece, while Venezuela edged the Philippines in service aces, 7-6.
The Alas Girls will return to action on Thursday, August 13 against South Korea, the undefeated top team from Pool D, in the round of 16. (Adrian Co)
