ALEXANDRA Eala moved within sight of the next round of the Cincinnati Open after taking a commanding lead over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse before their round of 64 match was suspended because of lightning.
The 17th-seeded Eala dominated the opening set, 6-1, and continued her momentum in the second set, racing to a 3-0 advantage before play was halted at Holcim Stadium 3.
Eala was in complete control when the suspension was called, winning nine consecutive games from 0-1 in the opening set through the first three games of the second.
The Filipina left-hander also made the most of her break-point opportunities, converting all five of her chances. She won 43 points overall compared with Ruse’s 19 and took 20 receiving points.
Eala was also more effective on serve, winning 67 percent of her first-serve points and 69 percent of her second-serve points. Ruse, meanwhile, managed just 42 percent and 21 percent, respectively.
The match will resume once weather conditions allow play to continue, with Eala needing only three more games to complete the victory and advance to the next round.
Eala entered Cincinnati as the No. 17 seed following her round of 16 finish at the National Bank Open in Toronto, where her run was ended by Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic. (Adrian Co)
