QATAR coach Hakan Demir drew attention after appearing to splash water toward game officials as he left the court following his ejection during his team’s 123-70 loss to Japan in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on Monday night in Tokyo.
A video circulating on social media showed Demir, who had been sent off after receiving two technical fouls, walking toward the sideline before water was spilled in the direction of the officials.

The incident occurred during the second half of the game at Toyota Arena, with Japan already in firm control of the contest.
Demir’s ejection forced Qatar assistant coach Cengiz Karadag to take over the team’s bench duties for the remainder of the game.
Qatar struggled throughout the contest against Japan’s offensive attack, while the visitors were also without several key players.
Karadag said after the game that Qatar compounded its problems by committing costly mistakes early in the game.
“They started very well,” Karadag said of Japan, “and also we made really easy mistakes, especially at the beginning of the game. So, OK, I also congratulated my players who tried to do their best. But it’s not easy against the Japan team.”
Japan eventually pulled away for a 53-point victory, leaving Qatar unable to mount a serious challenge after falling behind early.
