THE proposed trade sending Joshua Munzon from Titan Ultra Giant Risers to TNT Tropang 5G remains a possibility despite the deal failing to push through in its initial form.
According to a report by Abante Bilyonaryo Group’s Homer Sayson, the desire to part ways with the former top overall pick was driven in part by Titan Ultra’s desire to reduce its payroll.
A source familiar with the negotiations told Sayson that the Giant Risers did not want to take on additional salary, with the proposed deal allowing the team to shed Munzon’s reported P420,000 monthly salary.
A Titan Ultra official who requested anonymity, acknowledged that managing the payroll remains a major challenge for an independent PBA team.
While the proposed trade may appear unfavorable in the short term, the move could improve the franchise’s financial position going forward.
TNT, meanwhile, reportedly viewed the opportunity as a chance to acquire a “premium player” and remains interested in Munzon.
The Tropang 5G are also reportedly not abandoning their pursuit of Munzon, particularly with the team looking to bolster a depleted point guard rotation.
However, the original proposal will have to be reworked to satisfy the PBA Commissioner’s Office before the transaction can proceed.
Munzon has been one of Titan Ultra’s leading players this conference, averaging 15.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists in eight games.
The 29-year-old forward also enjoyed a breakout campaign with NorthPort last season, earning Most Improved Player honors and a spot on the All-Defensive Team.
With both sides still motivated to address their respective needs, the report indicated that Munzon could eventually land with TNT if the teams can agree on a revised package acceptable to the league. (By The Staff)
