GILAS Pilipinas had its scheduled practice cancelled on Wednesday afternoon, September 9, as organizers called off the session due to expected heavy rains and flooding in Nagoya.
“Practice this afternoon was cancelled by the organizers because of heavy expected rains and flooding,” head coach Tim Cone said.
The cancellation comes just two days before Gilas opens its Asian Games title defense against Bahrain on September 11.
With the practice scrapped, the national team lost another opportunity to hold a full training session as it fine-tunes its preparations for the tournament.
The situation also affected Calvin Oftana, who was unable to attend the scheduled training session as Gilas adjusted its activities because of the weather conditions.
Gilas is coming off a difficult preparation period after dropping both of its tune-up games against South Korea before heading to the Asian Games.
The Philippines will begin its Group C campaign against Bahrain at 12 noon on Friday before facing Kazakhstan on September 12 and China on September 14.
The defending Asian Games champions are also set to start the tournament without naturalized player Justin Brownlee, who remains unavailable while recovering from injuries in the United States.
With the opening game against Bahrain fast approaching, Gilas now faces another adjustment to its preparation as organizers prioritize the safety of the teams amid the worsening weather in Nagoya. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
