FORMER senator and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is set to return to government service after being tapped to lead the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), according to a report by Politiko website.
Pacquiao is scheduled to take his oath Tuesday, September 8, before President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. at the Malacañang Palace.
He will succeed Lope Santos III, who remained in the post as recently as August.
The appointment brings Pacquiao back into government four years after his six-year stint in the Senate ended. As NAPC lead convenor and secretary, he will hold Cabinet secretary rank and oversee the commission’s secretariat.
Pacquiao served as senator from 2016 to 2022 after building a celebrated boxing career highlighted by world championships in eight weight divisions.
He sought the presidency in the 2022 elections instead of pursuing another Senate term but finished third in the race won by Marcos.
Pacquiao later attempted to return to the Senate in the 2025 midterm elections, running under the Marcos-backed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas coalition.
His bid was unsuccessful as he placed 18th in the senatorial contest with roughly 10.4 million votes.
His appointment to the NAPC marks Pacquiao’s latest return to public service, this time focusing on the government’s efforts to address poverty and improve the welfare of disadvantaged sectors. (Adrian Co)
