Former NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire has embarked on a new career in law enforcement after graduating from the Miami Dade College School of Justice’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy on Wednesday.
The six-time NBA All-Star will join the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, fulfilling a childhood ambition inspired by relatives who previously worked in law enforcement.
According to Miami Dade College, Stoudemire completed months of intensive training and received the Harry “Coach” Everett Award in recognition of his contributions to the academy’s program.
The former basketball star’s transition marks a significant shift from his years in professional sports to public service, where he is expected to help serve the community and become a positive influence on young people.
Stoudemire rose to prominence during his eight seasons with the Phoenix Suns from 2002 to 2010, establishing himself as one of the NBA’s leading big men. He averaged 21.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game during his time with the franchise, shooting 54.4 percent from the field.
He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2003 and earned six All-Star selections. He also received four All-NBA Second Team honors and one First Team selection.
His contributions to Phoenix were recognized in 2024 when the Suns retired his No. 32 jersey, placing him among the franchise’s most celebrated players. He also holds a place in the team’s Ring of Honor.
Beyond Phoenix, Stoudemire played for the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat during his NBA career.
His latest move into law enforcement opened a new chapter for the former basketball standout, allowing him to pursue a long-held personal goal away from the court. (Adrian Co)
