Michael Phillips intends to make himself available for Gilas Pilipinas in the November window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers, while remaining committed to his professional contract in Japan.
Ben Phillips, the Gilas forward’s brother and manager, confirmed the development to Fastbreak columnist Homer Sayson, saying the 24-year-old is prepared to answer the national team’s call.
Phillips currently plays for the Kyoto Hannaryz in Japan’s B.League, where he is serving a two-year contract.
His camp also addressed speculation that the Filipino-American forward, popularly known as “Motor Mike,” could enter the PBA Rookie Draft next year.
“Mike is focused and committed to his current two-year contract with Kyoto Hannaryz,” Ben said, effectively shutting the door on the possibility of the forward joining the PBA next season.
Phillips’ potential availability would provide Gilas with another option as the Philippines prepares for its November qualifying assignments against Syria on Nov. 27 and Iran on Nov. 29 in Seremban, Malaysia.
The national team enters the window with a 4-4 win-loss record and needs victories to strengthen its bid for a place in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar. (Adrian Co)
