ALEXANDRA Eala will make her return to competitive action on Thursday when she takes on Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova in the round of 16 of the Singapore Tennis Open.
The No. 18-ranked Filipina tennis sensation advanced directly to the second round after receiving a bye as the tournament’s No. 3 seed.
Prozorova, ranked No. 180 in the world, booked her spot in the last 16 by defeating Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas in a three-set battle, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2, on Tuesday night.
The winner of the Eala-Prozorova match will advance to the quarterfinals and face either China’s Wang Xinyu or Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland.
The Singapore tournament marks Eala’s first competition since the US Open, where she reached the round of 16 before her campaign ended.
It is also her final WTA tournament before she joins Team Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Eala chose to compete at the Asian Games instead of the China Open as she prepares for her second consecutive appearance in the continental competition.
She won a bronze medal in the previous Asian Games and will seek to improve on that result in the upcoming edition. (Adrian Co)
