Senator Leila de Lima on Saturday called President Rodrigo Duterte a "haughty and prideful dictator" for rejecting developmental aid from the European Union, at the expense of people of Mindanao.
SINO KA DE LIMA PARA PAGSABIHAN NG GANYAN ANG PRESIDENTE? NAGHAHANAP KA NANAMAN NG ATENSIYON SA PUBLIKO.
"The withdrawal of outright EU grants and aid packages, mostly intended for Mindanao development, exemplifies the extent to which Duterte is willing to sacrifice the country's well-being in exchange for his political survival in the world stage," said De Lima in a handwritten statement from her detention facility in Camp Crame.
The senator, who has been jailed over drug charges, accused Duterte of "selling" the country to China, which she said supported the President's "murderous rampage because China could not care less for human rights."
"Now, because of EU pressure against his EJK (extrajudicial killing) policy, Duterte would rather act the haughty and prideful Third World dictator and deprive Mindanao communities of what is already guaranteed free assistance to Mindanao development," she added.
EU Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen said the decision to cut aid from the EU, would mean the loss of about 250 million Euros ($278.73 million) worth of grants mostly allocated to Muslim communities.
This move came days after Duterte won billions of dollars in pledges from China after attending the Belt and Road summit in Beijing.
De Lima then called Duterte as "not normal" for rejecting the EU aid, for "giving up" the country's claim on Spratlys, and for obtaining loans from the Chinese government.
"Duterte is refusing EU aid because he wants to go on killing petty addicts in his drug war. He would rather stay independent in his domestic policy of murdering civilians rather than keep foreign aid from the EU that in return, demands nothing other than that he stops the EJKs and starts respecting human right," De Lima said.
WHATEVER DE LIMA, WALA NAMAN NG NANINIWALA SAYO.. LAHAT NG DESISYON NG PRESIDENTE AY PINAGISIPAN NIYA NG MABUTI DAHIL MAY MALASAKIT SIYA SA PILIPINAS.
"He is running the country to the ground just to keep his personal bloodlust going, and he is taking every Filipino to the doghouse of global pariahs with him. Duterte doesn't care if he isolates and ruins this country, so long as he can go on his merry way killing people for sport," she further wrote.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella earlier said it was the Department of Finance that recommended Duterte not to accept grants from the EU, as these may allow it to interfere with Philippine affairs.
Newly appointed Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said that the rejection of aid does not only apply to the EU but also to other donor countries who will pose conditions that would interfere with the country's domestic policy on the war on drugs.
