Before making noise, priest activist Fr. Robert Reyes should address the sex abuses hounding the church before criticizing anyone else.
This is the advise Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II made to the "running priest" who accused him of already prejudging the slay case of 17 year old student student Kian delos Santos.
Aguirre hits back activist priest Fr. Robert Reyes for asking for his resignation amid doubts about his department's impartiality in handling the investigation of Kian Loyd Delos Santos' death.
Aguirre hits back activist priest Fr. Robert Reyes for asking for his resignation amid doubts about his department's impartiality in handling the investigation of Kian Loyd Delos Santos' death.
Reyes said the Cabinet official must quit for "making a mockery of the justice system."
The priest earlier went to the Department of Justice to support calls from student leaders for Aguirre to recuse himself from the investigation of the murder and torture complaints filed against policemen linked to Delos Santos' killing.
"I am just wondering why in the face of reports of Filipino priests molesting minors, of Filipino priests fathering children, of Filipino priests bringing minor girls to motels and those Filipino priests molesting sacristans, the good Fr. Reyes is surprisingly silent on these serious matters involving Filipino minors," Aguirre said.
On July 28 a 55-year-old priest in Marikina City for allegedly attempting to have sex with a 13-year-old girl. In an entrapment operation, Eastern Police District operatives nabbed Monseigneur Arnel Lagarejos, who is assigned in Marikina and Rizal, and a 16-year-old boy from San Mateo, Rizal who was named as the girl's alleged pimp.
Lagarejos faces charges for violating the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, which includes penalties for receiving a person for prostitution or sexual exploitation.
Aguirre reminded the public that he served at the pleasure of President Rodrigo Duterte.
"While I respect the view of everyone to express themselves freely, I will stay for as long as I enjoy the trust and confidence of the President," Aguirre said.
Aguirre also said he would not resign from his post "as long as I enjoy the trust and confidence of the President."
In a letter filed at the DOJ on Tuesday, Reyes and some student leaders urged the Justice Secretary to inhibit from handling the murder and torture complaint filed against the police officers, citing he is allegedly biased on the case.
The group particularly called out Aguirre for his pronouncements stating Kian’s case was “blown out of proportion” by the media and that no one is condemning drug-related killings but only deaths caused by police officers.
Signatories to the letter include Karla Yu, convenor of the Millenials Against Dictators; Amber Quiban, national secretary general of the University of the Philippines Bukluran System; Jeza Antonette Rodriguez, OIC national secretary general, Student Council Alliance of the Philippines; and Moira Macainag, Director for Social and Human Sciences of the PLM UNESCO Club.
Aguirre earlier dismissed such claims, saying the students leaders are unfamiliar with the procedures at the agency.
