We bet you’ve already noticed the thinning number of Angkas riders in Metro Manila.
This is mainly because the management of the company has heeded the warning of the technical working group (TWG) tasked by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to monitor the ongoing motorcycle-taxi pilot run. The three agencies making up the TWG—the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)—are now apprehending motorcycle-taxi riders who continue to operate, but are not on the official list of pilot-run participants.
Thousands of Angkas riders lost their jobs after the TWG set a limit to the number of riders that may be deployed by Angkas, JoyRide, and Move It in the experimental scheme. This is despite each motorcycle-company now being permitted 15,000 riders in Metro Manila, 3,000 riders in Metro Cebu, and 3,000 riders in Cagayan de Oro.
Says George Royeca, chief transport advocate of Angkas, to the currently displaced riders: “Magtiwala kayo sa akin na hindi ako titigil ipaglaban kayo. We will continue to fight.”
He believes that JoyRide and Move It will not be able to use up the 15,000-rider quota for Metro Manila, and the TWG might reallocate the vacant slots to Angkas riders. “Kaya wag kayo kakalas para mabuo pa rin natin ang pamilyang Angkas,” he adds.
According to MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago, drivers of colorum taxis are facing a penalty of P6,000, three- to six-month suspension of their vehicle registration, and possible cancellation of their driver’s license.
