On suggestion that President Duterte issues a public apology for the government’s “delayed” response amid the nCoV outbreak, former DLSU History professor van Ybiernas couldn’t help but laughed at the critics.
Ybiernas asked critics to fill him in where did the government fail in relation to the nCoV outbreak?
Ybiernas said that one victim di*d due to the virus but he asked critics if it was because of government neglect or because the victim received treatment when it was already too late?
Ybiernas said the mortality rate because of the virus is negligible in the country despite the presence of a large numbers of Chinese in the country. In fact, he lauded the efforts of the authorities at the Kalibo International Airport to stop the entry of a planeload of passengers from Wuhan.
On people calling the travel ban imposed on all flights from China “delayed”, Ybiernas called them “bugok” or dumb for urging the Philippines to issue the ban ahead of other countries, which he said is inappropriate.
Ybiernas reckoned that the high number of PUI (person under investigation) in the country isn’t a bad reflection of the country. In fact, the higher the PUI means the country is very safety-conscious, which is good.
Ybiernas conceded that if we are in the business of nitpicking, we can find find faults against the government but based on international standards, the country’s response has been very satisfactory.

“Delayed” ang travel ban natin? Sinong bugok ang may sabi nyan? Ang gusto ng mga bugok na ito tayo talaga ang unang una mag impose ng travel ban. That’s unreasonable! Nag impose tayo ng ban kasabay ng iba pang bansa, which is the safe course of action.
Hindi masamang repleksyon sa pamahalaan ang bilang ng PUI. In fact, mas madaming PUI mas maganda kasi ibig sabihin nyan ay sobrang safety conscious ang gobyerno, na maganda.
Sure, kung nitpicking tayo, may mahahanap talagang maipupuna sa gobyerno pero base sa international standards ay maayos naman ang tugon ng gobyerno sa krisis
