“Ano kaming nagtratrabaho sa ER? Walang pamilya? Kaya ok lang kami ang mamatay?”
This is the chief complaint of a Pinoy ER doctor on social media amid public criticism, pressure that comes with the job as the frontliner in the battle against COVID-19 and uncooperative colleagues in the health care professionals.
Dr. Simon Andrew Bunyi of the Philippine General Hospital shared his sentiment and co-workers on Facebook with the title “An ER doctor In the time of COVID-19”.
In a Facebook post, Bunyi sounded perplexed why there are Filipinos who questioned the capability of the country and worse, even accuses them of not doing their jobs in the absence of confirmed cases of covid19 in the country in the last three weeks. “Why are there Filipinos who would say that the only reason there hasn’t been a confirmed case of covid19 in 3 weeks is because we don’t test? Wala daw tayong capability. Fake news daw ang mga tine-test na yan para lang hindi tayo magpanic. Yada yada.”
Bunyi said that as an ER doctor, he can attest that the allegation our health workers aren’t testing the PUIs is false. “As an ER doctor, i can attest na we do test all patients who are PUIs- Persons Under Investigation. We constantly send swabs to DOH. RITM. Also the test is FREE. Kahit private or sa govt, it will be processed.”
Bunyi opened up his frustrations in his line of work because despite there best efforts to stop the spread of covid19, there is a sector in our society that refuses to cooperate with government efforts. “Ang nakakapanghinayang lang, yung mga pinoy/OFWs na pag tiningnan mo sa ER, with fever/cough/travel history from hot zone areas: ‘You fall po in the PUI category. We need to admit you in isolation an do swab confirmatory tests and wait for the results’. Nagagalit. Imposible daw na magkaron sila nun. Hindi naman daw sila chinese.”
Bunyi said the OFW’s would even to the extent escape during confinement and mandated isolation to stop the spread of the virus. “Yung iba iiyak, wala daw magaalaga ng anak nya na hindi pa nya nakikita ng 4 yrs. Kababalik lang nyang pinas tapos i-iisolate sya. TAPOS MAGAATEMPT NA TUMAKAS. Literally TUMAKBO. WTF. Mam, public health concern po ito. I understand your situation, but we need to consider everybody’s health.”
Bunyi lamented the incidents of Filipinos considered PUIs running away despite their best efforts to explain why they need to be isolated, even to the point of risking their safety because they are wearing oversize gowns during the medical exam of the patient. “Kahit anong matinding explanation ang gawin mo and empathy ang ipahatid mo sa kanya; susubukan ka pa rin nilang takasan (explaining thru a PPE gown na XL na maximum e pang 5’11” , e 6’1” kang doctor, todo tiis na lang na pagkasyahin at umasa na negative ang pasyente mo, dahil may exposed parts ka talaga).”
Bunyi shared the common lines among Filipino PUIs. “Sasabihin sayo: “Wala kaming pera pampatest!” Ikaw naman sasabihin “Sir, libre po yung pag swab at confirmatory test ng DOH”. Gagawa pa rin sila ng ibang dahilan. Mawawalan sila ng trabaho pag na isolate sila ng matagal. Walang maiiwan na magaalaga sa anak. Claustrophobic sya, mamamatay sya sa maliit na isolation room.”
At this juncture, Dr. Bunyi shared the “hugot” lines of the people in the ER against their peers who refuse to lend them hand for fear of the covid19. “Kung alam nyo lang po ang hugot naming mga nilalang ng ER during these times. Nakakaiyak din minsan. Parang unfair. Yung ibang staff sa hospital ayaw magpapull out sa ER pag toxic na kami sa PUI/PUM (person under monitoring). May pamilya daw sila.”
“Ano kaming nagtratrabaho sa ER? Walang pamilya? Kaya ok lang kami ang mamatay?” Bunyi asked.
Bunyi also aired his sentiment against his fellow doctors who refuse to accept PUIs under their service, citing of many flimsy reasons. “Yung iba naman na attending doctor, pag aadmitan mo ng PUI under their service, they will turn down! May BS pa sila na they will be out of town, busy, etc.”
Bunyi praised some of his colleagues for their honesty whey they refuse to accept his referral. “At least yung isa mejo honest : ‘Doc, sorry ha, sa iba na lang mo iadmit. Hindi ko matitingnan yan. Im scared.'”
Bunyi said that he has no other choice but to pretend he perfectly understands them. “So sasabihin mo na lang : “Ah ok po doc, i understand”. Kahit sa totoo lang gusto mong sumigaw na “I NEED AN ACCEPTABLE REASON!!”- cue in piolo pascual”
Bunyi hoped this covid19 thing is over soon and extend his sympathy to fellow frontliners. “I really hope matapos na itong part of history. I stand with all the health personnel especially the frontliners. The fight is still long, and it will still be rough.”
Bunyi urged fellow frontliners to hang in there despite the challenges they face and feeling of unappreciated and putting their lives in the line of fire. “Kapit lang. Kahit alam ko hindi naman tayo na-appreciate, inaaway pa nga tayo e. Ako mismo i want to thank you. For risking your lives everyday.”
Bunyi couldn’t help but share what a fellow doctor told him, like he was blamed for specializing in ER Med. “At dun sa isang doctor na sinabihan ako 2 weeks ago na: ‘Ba’t kasi ER Med kinuha mo doc?! Mamamatay ka ng maaga nyan sige ka.'”
Bunyi ended the rant on Facebook by sharing his supposed reply to his fellow doctor and that he is proud ER Med doctor and taking a jab at the same time. “I want to tell that doctor na i’m proud na ER Med ang kinuha ko, ESPECIALLY during these times. Kasi may mga tao parin na tulad mo. Kung lahat na lang will be like you, paano na?”
