Sangiao believes son Jhanlo will reach bantamweight elite in due time

Many people are already looking at Jhanlo Mark “The Machine” Sangiao as the new face of Team Lakay, but his father and head coach believe that it’s something his son should have to earn.

The young Sangiao looks for his fourth straight win when he battles Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu at ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs.Grigorian inside Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 5.

His father, Mark Sangiao, says it all boils down to how “The Machine” will live up to his potential.

“Sometimes I tone down on all the talk of him being the face of the team just to temper expectations. I just continue to remind him that there are no shortcuts in this course and that you have to work hard to get to where you want to be,” said the elder Sangiao.

“If he’s truly the face of this team now, he has to work for it, and everything will be based on his results in the [ONE Championship] Circle. That’s what I’m always reminding him.”

Sangiao reminded everyone that Jhanlo is only 21, and having the same type of pressure that his predecessor Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang had back then is a big ask from young adults.

But nonetheless, in just a matter of years, Sangiao has seen his son grow from a kid who used to emulate his senior fighters to one of the country’s brightest stars.

He has no doubt that his son can carry that mantle and take his career to even greater heights, as long as he works for it.

“To his credit, he started doing this when he was a kid, literally a kid. I’ve seen him train and grow to the fighter that he is today, and I believe he’s on his way there,” said Sangiao.

“Now it’s all about continuing what he started and being consistent with his obligations as a fighter. He has to be clear with what his goals are. Is it just to be the face of Team Lakay or a world champion like his former teammates here?”
