UST Golden Tigresses, CSB Lady Blazers triumph over foes in Shakey’s Super League

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers scored separate sweeps to kick off their Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals campaign late Sunday night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Golden Tigresses, who stepped in for the National University Lady Bulldogs, romped past CESAFI champions University of San Jose-Recoletos, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16, for a 1-0 record in Pool B.

Mary Margaret Banagua spearheaded the offense for the Golden Tigresses with 12 markers; Cassie Carballo added 11 markers; and Angeline Poyos and Jonna Perdido ended with 10 points apiece.

“Actually, back-up lang kami sa NU na maglalaro nga sa national team, so happy kami na nabigyan ng chance makalaro dito sa SSL, especially mga rookies namin,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilo “Kungfu” Reyes.

“Maganda naman at nanalo, so hopefully, sana sa next games, tumaas pa ‘yung level ng laro namin,” added the veteran Golden Tigresses coach, who is still adjusting from the departure of stars Eya Laure and Imee Hernandez.

USJ-R slid to 1-1 in Pool B with no player scoring in double digits after an impressive win over De La Salle-Dasmarinas on Saturday evening.

Reigning NCAA champions the Lady Blazers, on the other hand, opened their campaign in style with a 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18 win over Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) from General Santos City.

Zamantha Nicole scored 19 points on eight attacks, six blocks, and five aces; Clydel Catarig and Corrine Apostol provided 11 and nine points, respectively, as the Lady Blazers needed only 68 minutes to notch the straight-sets victory.

“Masaya for our first win. Maganda ‘yung ganito na parang selection na rin. Qualifiers kumbaga kasi top ng liga nila, top ng liga namin. Masaya at maganda ‘yung ganitong competition,” said Lady Blazers head coach Jerry Yee.

The Lady Blazers tied the Enderun College Lady Titans on top of Pool D with a 1-0 win-loss slate, while the NDDU bowed out of contention with a 0-2 record.
