Chot Reyes to employ wingmen as point guards in case Scottie Thompson misses World Cup

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes is preparing for the worst-case scenario surrounding the injury of point guard Scottie Thompson.

In an interview with former PBA commissioner Noli Eala in the Power&Play program, Reyes said that he is currently testing if CJ Perez can handle playmaking duties while Thompson is still recovering from his right metacarpal fracture.

“We were trying to have CJ as the other point guard to play that role,” the Gilas coach said.

Perez, a wing player throughout his PBA career, became the designated point guard on some plays during Gilas’ tune-up game against Senegal.

“Week by week, kasi yung kay Scottie, depending on how his healing progresses. But remember, he is our starting point guard,” Reyes added. “But right now, we’re preparing for the eventuality na di talaga siya umabot.”

Right now, Gilas has been relying on Dwight Ramos, Kiefer Ravena, and Chris Newsome to be the team’s primary point guards.

Aside from Perez, Reyes also shared that Jordan Clarkson would also be one of their point guards.

“We also have another point guard, na wala pa rito. His name is Jordan. Ang initial niya is JC,” Reyes said. (MJD)
