Tim Cone uninterested in Gilas Pilipinas head coaching job

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings head coach Tim Cone has expressed no interest in assuming the position of head coach for Gilas Pilipinas.

As per the most accomplished PBA coach, he does not intend to remain part of the Gilas Pilipinas program should Chot Reyes be replaced as head coach by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

“If coach Chot [Reyes] goes, I go,” Cone said in an interview with One Sports’ Carlo Pamintuan.

Netizens have been suggesting Tim Cone’s name as their preferred choice for the Gilas Pilipinas head coaching position, rather than Reyes.

However, Cone mentioned that he became a part of the Gilas Pilipinas program because of his belief that Reyes was the most suitable person for the job.

“Some assistant coaches come into a team believing that they will get their chance to be the head coach someday, but that’s not me,” Cone said.

“I’m here to serve at coach Chot’s pleasure. I’m only here to support him because I believe in him,” he added.

“I’ve been with this program for a year now, and I really believe that he is still the best man for the job. I think the steps he has taken are correct, and we’ve never really been out of any game,” he further said.

Cone had previously served as the coach for Team Philippines in 1998 and during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, during which they achieved victory and secured the gold medal.
