10 LGU-based volleyball teams to join inaugural MPVA tourney

Ten local government unit-based squads are set to participate in the inaugural Maharlika Pilipinas Volleyball Association (MPVA) women’s tournament slated from October to December.

According to MPVA commissioner Michael Tavera, the tournament will use a home-and-away format, just like the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

Among the confirmed teams are Immaculada Concepcion College-Caloocan; Marikina; Caloocan; Rizal; Biñan, Laguna; Nasipit, Agusan del Norte; Manila; Bulacan; Bacoor, Cavite; Quezon City; and San Juan.

Tavera said players aged 18 and older are eligible to play in the league, but the teams must consist mostly of homegrown players plus a maximum of five ex-professional players, of whom only three can play at the same time.

The tournament format to be used will be a single-round robin in the eliminations and a best-of-three series in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship round.

Just like in other volleyball leagues, the MPVA is also planning to implement the coaches challenge system beginning in the semifinals round, said Tavera.

MPVA founder Manny Pacquiao, for his part, said he is planning to expand the league with a men’s tournament and a junior MPVA tournament by next year.

“For now, we will start with the women’s tournament, and then by next year, naman, ‘yung men’s tournament and JR MPVA, parang ‘yung sa JR MPBL,” Pacquiao said in a press conference on Friday.

“My vision is for the MPVA to become an institution and to develop grassroots. Maraming kabataan ang mahilig sa sports pero kulang ang programa. Tayo ay nagbibigay ng pagkakataon sa kanila,” he added.
