Canada upsets favored Slovenian team, leaves Luka heartbroken

Canada ousted Luka Doncic and the Slovenian squad, 100-89, to book a trip to the FIBA World Cup 2023 semifinals Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 31 points on top of 10 rebounds and four assists, while Dillon Brooks fired 14 points and three boards as they fended off Slovenia.

The Canadians were staring at a 50-all deadlock when RJ Barrett and Gilgeous-Alexander mounted a 19-5 run. They eventually clinched an 80-64 lead following a triple by Nickeil Alexander-Walker with only 1:57 remaining in the third.

Slovenia launched a desperate hurrah to fight to within nine points, but the Canadians quashed out the uprising and grabbed a fifth win in six games.

Doncic ended up with 26 points, five dimes, and four boards before being ejected for a second technical.

The Slovenians crashed out with a 4-2 record.

Canada will next take on Serbia on Friday for a final berth.
