Was Oftana inadvertently excluded from Gilas’ World Cup roster?

Calvin Oftana was a revelation for Gilas Pilipinas on Friday night when they beat the visiting Changwon LG Sakers during their scrimmage at Philsports Arena.

Oftana, who was among those cut from the Gilas’ FIBA World Cup roster, brought down 11 rebounds and scored 13 points on 6-of-7 field goal shooting in 21 minutes of play.

This helped the nationals secure an 86-81 victory over Changwon.
Now that he’s officially in for the Asian Games, Oftana expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, showing what he could have brought to the recent FIBA World Cup campaign had he been part of it.

“It’s a blessing and an opportunity for me na makakalaro sa Asian Games, so I’m excited.”

“Syempre nagpapasalamat ako kay coach Tim at sa management na tiwala sa akin. I need to work for it, and itulong ko kung anong magagawa natin para sa team,” he said in a previous interview.

Aside from Oftana, other players who also did not make it to the Gilas’ FIBA World Cup roster included Chris Newsome, Thirdy Ravena, and Ray Parks Jr.
