Yeng Guiao advocates for independent PBA teams to develop their drafted players

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao has urged the PBA to address the parity issue in the league by permitting independent teams to nurture the players they drafted.

Guiao, a seven-time PBA champion coach, noted that it has been problematic in recent seasons, with top rookie picks often going to powerhouse teams.

“We really have a parity problem, and we have to face it and accept it. What’s the solution? The solution is (PBA) drafts where there is a good talent level,” Guiao said in an interview with CNN Philippines Sports Desk on Monday night.

“One way for the PBA to solve the problem is by letting the independent squads develop the players they pick through the rookie draft and not allow the big teams to poach them,” he added.

Guiao also emphasized that the imbalance among the teams has negatively affected the PBA, especially when compared to other Asian leagues like the Japan B.League and the Korean Basketball League, which are progressing.

“The problem is, when a player gets better and gains experience, he goes to the strong teams. I think that is something we have to call out. If you don’t call it out, you are complicit,” Guiao said.

“Let us respect the fans; they already know what’s really going on. We have to make the league better because other Asian leagues are getting better,” the fiery mentor further said.
